Thang Ta - Manipuri martial art

Thang Ta is a little known martial arts practised in the north-eastern Indian state of Manipur. The art went underground after the state (then a country) came under the British rule. However, it survived and has seen a resurgence.

Some of my friends found it similar to Silat - the Malay / Indonesian martial art.

Check out this clip I found on YouTube:

The Freemium model

The 'Freemium model' is the latest concept from Chris Armstrong, Editor-in-chief of Wired and best known for his 'Long Tail' theory.

I read the exclusive interview with the author on the 123-reg blog, where Chris discusses his latest concept and clarifies some misconceptions about the Long Tail theory. He also shares his thoughts on social networking as well.

In the interview, Chris mentions how online companies "experiment with giving away one thing to sell something else." I guess commercial blogs work with the same principle but in a slightly different way. That is why you see ads and sponsored posts on a number of popular blogs.

I specially found the interview with Chris really interesting because it is quite relevant to my doctoral research topic. It was also the first time I heard about the social networking site Ning (www.ning.com). That doesn't sound good for someone who's doing research on the Internet and show how no one can claim to be a "Net Guru" as the Internet is evolving so quickly with new applications and sites emerging every day. Looking forward to his new book.

Wet Roses

I haven't been making any Green Thumb Sunday posts for quite sometime. The garden is almost bare and the only plants doing well are the lavender and the rosemary. Went though my collection of pictures to see if I could find anything to post up and I found this picture of my roses taken after a shower on a September afternoon.

This is my Green Thumb Sunday post for this week. Join Green Thumb Sunday

Free press release distribution service

The importance of having a good public relations or PR cannot be overstated. In fact it may be crucial to your business especially in times of crisis and may a good way to defend yourself against critics. One of the easiest ways is to come up with regular press releases.

If you want to create awareness about your web site, business or project you might want to check out the press release distribution service provided by PRBuzz.com.

This online service is totally free and your press release can be up and online within 24 hours. Definitely a great idea to improve the search engine results page (or SERP) rankings for your desired keywords.

I am going to try it out now.

Bad start to the year

The New Year is not going well for me. First of all my old computer crashed. Several attempts to restart the computer failed and I had to reformat the hard disk followed by an installation of WIndows XP. Only thing I forgot was that Windows doesn't allow installation of XP on two different computers even though I had the original CD. Worse, I can't get in touch with the guy I bought the computer from.

On Thursday morning, I was on the way back home after seeing of my friends Kryzul, Hardy and Zaza. Was on the A46 when I suddenly heard a loud noise from my exhaust followed by a clanging, thumping sound. Quickly pulled over and discovered that my car silencer (muffler) had come off the exhaust pipe and was just hanging on literally by the thread. I pulled it off, put it in the boot and drove to my favourite workshop.

Yesterday, I learnt that one of my best friends - my old school mate, had passed away last month. I am still coming to terms with the news.

Just praying that it doesn't get worse than this.

Like always I am looking at the bright side. Like how it better the computer crashed now and not later when I might really need it and the fact that I had backed up all the important stuff including my assignment which is due on Monday. I just bought myself a new Dell PC online - I am calling it the PayPerPost PC.

The workshop also did a great job with the car and they only charged me £15 pound for welding the silencer back. Plus he promised that he would help me with my MOT which is coming up soon as well.

The only thing is that I cannot see any bright side on my friend's passing away. Can only hope that he's in a better place and pray that he rests in peace.

Save money on office supplies

All the time I get queries from a lot of people asking me how it feels to be a student again. It exciting but to tell the truth, it's much harder now. I guess my brains are not that sharp any more and it's hard to sit down and listen to lectures for hours. I need to take a break every half an hour or so with loads of coffee.

Money is another important issue that always comes up for people like us who left their full-time jobs to study again. More so if you have a family. Even with a scholarship, we try to stretch every penny we have.

After getting free office supplies for years, it's a shock when you realise that stuff like notebooks, pens, printer ink are not exactly cheap. Looking for discount office supplies, I came across the OfficeDeals.info website. This site lists hundreds of discount coupons, coupon codes and promotions from leading stores that sell office supplies, computers, office furniture and a range of products and services. The merchants listed including among others, Office Depot, Vistaprint, etc.

I recently bought a Dell PC after my old computer crashed. I wish I had come to the site earlier because they have all the latest coupon codes from Dell here. I guess this site will appeal not only to students but business owners as well. Do check out the site if you are looking to save some money.
