Clearing up the front of the house

The small patch in front of our house (can't call it a garden) have been neglected for a while and was slowly turning into a jungle. I had been planning to do something about it and today I finally got the chance. I bought a used strimmer today at the Long Marston car boot sale and like everything you buy at car boot, was not sure whether it worked. Well, it worked and the garden (I can call it that now) looks much better now.

My Green Thumb Sunday post for this week.

Meme for charity

Finally completed this long overdue meme. I was tagged by Haq Ahamd better known as Dad of Four.

This meme is quite long and is for a noble cause. It was started by Idham who has pledged to contribute RM127 to the Rumah Anak Yatim Darul 'Izzah orphanage in Malaysia for each meme completed by any blogger before 26th August 2007. His target is RM10,000.

All you have to do is to complete at least seventeen out of the following twenty seven sentences. It took me a while but I finally completed all of it.

However, just remember to leave a comment on Idham's blog to let him know that you have done the meme.

So here goes:

1. A person is only as good as ... his actions.

2. Friendship is always ... something that should not be taken for granted.

3. To love is to... share happy and sad moments, willingly.

4. Money makes me... work.

5. I miss ... going to work

6. My way of saying I care is by ... kissing and hugging.

7. I try to spread love and happiness by... helping others in need.

8. Pick the flowers when... I really have too, other wise I perfer them on the plant.

9. To love someone is to... give in completely.

10. Beauty is... but skin deep.

11. When I was thirteen, what I remember the most was... a family trip to Udaipur in Rajasthan India.

12. When I was twenty one, I remember... thinking whether to further my study or start working.

13. I am most happy when ... I am with my family.

14. Nothing makes me happier than ... waking up everyday next to a wonderful lady who's my wife.

15. If I can change one thing, I will change... nothing.

16. If smiles were...forced ...then I... won't be happyseeing the face of my kids smiling everyday.

17. Wouldn't it be nice if we could... travel and live anywhere we wanted without any restrictions.

18. If you want to ... earn a lot of money ...then you have to ... work much harder

19. Money is not everything but...we can't live without it.

20. The most touching moment I have experienced is... when I first held my daughter after she came out of my wife's womb.

21. I smile when...I feel happy

22. When I am happy, I...smile

23. If only I don't have to ... exercise in order to be fit but that's impossible.

24. The best thing I did yesterday was... something I do almost everyday - take care of the kids.
25. If I ever write a book, I will give it this title... ah ok lah

26. One thing I must do before I die is... remember God!

27. Doing this meme, I feel like ... I have learnt a little bit about myself.

I now tag:
1. Azwan

The expat meme

I was tagged by Lilian in Thailand sometime back. Finally got down to doing this 5,4,3,2,1 meme.

Name five things you love in your new country:

1. The excellent public transport facilities
2. The beautiful parks
3. Car boot sales
4. Courteous drivers
5. Fast internet access (at least as compared to Malaysia)

Name four things that you miss from your native country. (I’ll take Malaysia)

1. My family and friends(similar to Lilian)
2. Cheap food
3. Malls that open way late (sometimes past midnight)
4. Being able to go out at midnight to have a cup of teh tarik (pulled tea) and eat a late supper at a 24 hours open mamak stall.

Name three things that annoy you a bit (or much) in your new country:

1. The NHS doctors who are not very friendly (except for one lady doctor)
2. High tax on almost everything (including TV)
3. Racist yobs.

Name two things that surprise you (or surprised you in the beginning) in your new country:

1. The fact that most of the houses up for rental were owned by British of Pakistani origin (at least in Coventry and Birmingham).
2. Finding out that a lot of things are way better in Malaysia. This includes the level of service provided by some companies which leaves a lot to be desired.

Name one thing that you would miss terribly in your new country, if you had to leave it:

1. Nothing much actually. I guess I am still new here to miss anything.

I pass this meme on to anyone who would like to do it.

Place I really want to go to

Doris tagged me again with another meme - this time about the place you want to go. It got me thinking about the places I have always wanted to visit - Hawaii, Seychelles, Holland, Egypt, Turkey and Easter Island among others in a long list.

However, when I really thought about it, there is one place I really want to go - Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Not really for tourism but more for spiritual reasons. I have heard so many amazing stories from people who have already been there - either performing their hajj or umrah, that I want to feel it for my myself.

Why do I blog

Here are the 5 reasons why I blog:

1. Passion

I love blogging. It was my hobby but my wife calls it an addiction. Have been writing for magazines, newsletters as well as academic journals. Stared off reading other's blogs and leaving comments before finally deciding to start my own. It was a natural transition. Have realised that my writing skills have indeed improved since I started blogging 3 years ago.

2. Interactivity

Like Doris, I love sharing my ideas and experiences with people. What really attracted me to blogging was the interactive nature of blogs. The fact that my visitors could tell me what they thought about my posts - negative as well as positive. I love to receive comments.

3. Ranting

Blogging also give me an excellent opportunity to share with my readers, experiences with different organisations and companies - good as well as bad. As my regular visitors are aware, I do post a number of product and service reviews on my blogs. Companies and organisations better watch out when their products and/ or service quality don't meet my expectations.

On certain occasions when newspapers refused to publish my letter, blogging was the only option to voice out my bad experiences. Some companies have got back to me personally.

4. Networking

It's amazing, how many friends I have made online through blogging from all around the World - most of whom I have never met but feel like I know them personally. Through their blogs, I have shared in their happy moments as well as sad. Seen their kids grow up and even met up with some of them physically.

5. Making money

When I started blogging, this was the last thing from my mind. At a certain phase, I was even against the very idea of making money from personal blogs. Have to admit that I have made an about turn. Now I feel that there is nothing wrong with making money from blogs and have actually made quite a bit from carrying ads and writing sponsored posts. I have also made money indirectly through networking. Have worked on a few projects with people whom I met though my blog. Yeah! Networking is good.

I have been tagged again by Doris. I tag anybody who is interested.

Malaysian bloggers meme

Got tagged by Lilian, the (in)famous 5Xmom (just joking). I have to list down five of my favourite Malaysian bloggers. It's quite hard to choose because I visit a lot of Malaysian blogs everyday. Anyway, here are the top 5 (not in any particular order):

1. Chan Lilian - the lady who tagged me is also one of my idols. Her posts are humorous and witty - a great combination. However, may not be safe for kids. he he he. I learned a lot about making money from blogs, through her blogs. That's right, "Blogs". She actually has like 12 other blogs.

2. Kenny Sia - Arguably, Malaysia's most famous blogger. His blog receives like 15k visitors daily and that is amazing. Contrary to what some people say, he does write about serious stuff. Only he writes them in his own humorous way.

3. Lainie - Really creative lady. She write super duper long posts with numerous topics - it's crazy.

4. Azlynne - Another lady who write really long posts. Been a regular to her blog for quite sometime now - maybe because both of us like rock music and sci-fi.

5. Lucia Lai - Writes on some very serious/ controversial topics that I am worried that she might get into trouble with the authorities on day. She's one of my regular visitors (who leave comments ) too.

I am not going to tag anybody. Everyone is welcome to join in. Just leave a comment and I will add you name to a list below:
1. ?

Am I weird meme

Got tagged by Lilian.

The rules: Each player of this game starts with the ‘6 weird things about you.’ People who get tagged need to write a blog of their own 6 weird things as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don’t forget to leave a comment that says ‘you are tagged’ in their comments and tell them to read your blog.

So here goes...
1. I am a ovo-lacto vegetarian. Almost everybody in Malaysia (not all) thinks that is weird.
2. Went without driving a car for nearly two years after I obtained my car license because I couldn't afford one. Only re-learnt to drive properly later with my girl friend (later to be my wife) as my driving instructor.
3. Worked as the communications officer of an International NGO for quite sometime. The weird thing is that I was selected based on my IT skills. FYI, I don't have any IT background.
4. A lot of people seem to think I am "orang Melayu" (Malay), more so after I started the Melayu Boleh Project. I am not a Malay but I am married to one.
5. Some people thought that I am a Jew because of my name. The reaction have been good as well as bad.
6. I love classic rock music but some of my favourite songs are old love songs from the sixties and seventies.

I am now tagging Lucia, Acat, Azlynne, Ita, Madder and Zaza
