Ikea the supermarket

Last week I was leaving the office when I met a friend. He was so surprised when I told him that I was going to the Ikea Coventry store to have lunch with my wife and son. "Are you sure?" he asked.

He is looking forward to visiting the restaurant on his first ever trip soon.

My son fell asleep in the shopping trolley during a recent trip to the Coventry store.

Anyway, most people still see Ikea as a furniture store but strangely we rarely buy furniture though we are regulars at the store. Most of the time, we usually go to eat there but we do end up buying something or the other - a picture frame, candles, rugs or even plants. This may be de to the fact that we don't change furniture that often.

They have also started selling luggage, books, electrical equipment and even soap. In the future we may actually see Ikea transformed into something like Marks and Spencer (another favourite store of ours) selling everything from food and clothes to furniture and electrical equipment.

My trips to ikea in Malaysia were mostly just fun outings - I enjoyed seeing all the different models of furniture they have,,, and the creative displays were always fun to look at. I was even willing to put up with the terrible 1-Utama parking at that time to visit every few months.

Here in Chicago there's a huge ikea in Schaumberg, which I've been to once, I think. I'm not going to drive 45mins just to 'window shop' ... I do miss it, sometimes. :)

Hi Lynne, we used to frequent the Ikea outlet in Damansara as well. Over here in Coventry, the outlet is right in the city centre and just 7 minutes away from our house.

Looking forward to the day Ikea in Damansara turns into something like Marks and Spencer, so that I have more reasons to visit often. I mean in addition to my current weekly visit...yeah, I'm that crazy;)

mama22beas: I am sure they are looking to expand to other products even though furnitures is their core business. That's want consumers want but is also where they have the most competition.

BTW, I can't access your profile on Blogger.

Hi Angel: Better stick to the salads and keep away from the cakes ;-)

Neo, Emila: Yes. He was really tired I guess and just fell asleep on the comfy sheep skin rug.
